norda did not enter running through fashion. It entered through frustration.
Founded in Canada by Nick and Willa Martire, norda began with a simple problem: trail running shoes often felt heavier, bulkier and less considered than the environments they were supposed to move through. Both founders came from footwear, but they were also serious runners. Rather than working backward from a price point or a seasonal trend, they wanted to see what a trail shoe could become if materials, durability and movement came first.
That thinking produced the norda 001 in 2021.
The 001 immediately established the language the brand would continue building around. Its seamless upper was constructed using bio based Dyneema, an extremely strong and lightweight material more commonly associated with sailing, climbing and technical equipment. Underfoot, norda worked with Vibram to develop a sole built around grip, protection and long distance durability. Even the outsole pattern referenced the Canadian Shield, connecting the product back to the terrain that shaped the company.
What made the shoe stand out was not only the technology. It was how little norda tried to disguise it.
The woven texture of the upper, oversized outsole, reflective details and muted colors became the design. There were no unnecessary panels trying to make the shoe look technical. The materials already did that. norda approached footwear almost like industrial equipment, where every visible element was there because it served a purpose.
That philosophy has continued as the line has expanded.
The 002 sits lower to the ground for more technical terrain and greater control. The 003 moves between running, hiking and scrambling through a laceless Dyneema fit system. The lightweight 005 pushes the company deeper into racing, while the newer 055 takes the faster foam technology of the race shoe and brings it into a more protective mountain platform. Even the 008 recovery slide feels connected to the same idea, giving each model a defined place inside a larger system rather than creating silhouettes simply to expand the catalog.
The newest Black Diamond collaboration pushes that thinking even further.
The Black Diamond x norda 000 is an entirely new shoe created around mountain running, scrambling and alpine movement. It brings together norda’s Dyneema construction with Black Diamond’s history in climbing and mountain equipment. The collaboration extends into apparel and hardware, making the relationship feel less like a sneaker release and more like two technical companies meeting around the same idea of movement.
That is also where norda becomes especially interesting to us at Motion.
Performance came first, but fashion eventually followed.
The same qualities that made the shoes attractive to ultrarunners also made them appealing outside of running. The restrained shapes, unusual materials, natural color palettes and almost architectural construction allowed norda to move easily into fashion without changing what the product was. Collaborations with Satisfy, Zegna, HAVEN and others have placed the brand inside a much wider design conversation, but the footwear still looks connected to the mountains rather than a runway.
That balance is difficult.
Running brands often move toward lifestyle by softening the performance side of the product. norda has largely done the opposite. The more technical the shoes have become, the more culturally interesting they have become. Dyneema, Vibram rubber, race foam and climbing inspired construction are not hidden underneath marketing. They are the marketing.
The imagery follows the same logic. norda’s world is filled with rock, snow, grain, darkness, motion blur and isolated product photography. Runners appear inside the landscape rather than above it. Carabiners, trail packs and mountain equipment sit next to footwear with almost no separation between sport and design.
norda makes shoes for running, but it presents them as something closer to tools.
And that may be the clearest way to understand the brand. In an era where running shoes increasingly cross between performance, fashion and everyday life, norda never really had to cross over. It simply built a product with enough purpose, material intelligence and visual identity to exist in all three at once.
